“The Vow” is based on the true story of Krickitt and Kim Carpenter. Kim and Krickitt were married for the first time in the fall of 1993. Ten weeks later, the couple were in a severe car accident, which left Krickitt in a coma. When Krickitt emerged a month later, she thought the year was 1969 and that Nixon was still president. Tests soon determined that Krickitt had lost the prior 18 months of her memory, including all recollection of Kim — from meeting him to marrying him. After a therapist recommended the couple should try dating as a means of reacquainting themselves, Krickitt agreed. “I figured I liked him before, so I’ll get to know him again,” Krickitt told KRQE News. In 1996, Krickitt and Kim remarried. The Carpenters are still married, with two kids — and a story they sold to Hollywood.
